Dave Procter - conference presentation on Århus noise

Dave Procter journeyed across The Pennines back to his old stomping ground of Preston to present on the topic "Århus, in the Middle of Our Street - Reflections on Noise Music Culture in Denmark's Second City" as part of The Present and Future of Electronic Music conference held at the University of Central Lancashire. There was a great collection of speakers and a healthy turn out from Leeds. It was a grand day out indeed!

Frustrating Farsley Fail To Finish Fruitful - Farsley Celtic 0 - Carlton Town 0

This has to have been the most one-sided match I have ever witnessed at Throstle Nest as the Villagers somehow managed not to score against a throughly outplayed Carlton Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy. Aside from the odd scare, it was one-way traffic all match, but a collection of poorly struck shots and some decent keeping in the second half, kept Celtic at bay. The number of chances squandered is too annoying to recount in this match report, so I’ll not bother. The company of Bilberkopf, Pointon and Pickergill at least kept the humour going as chance after chance went begging. A severe rocket up the collective arse will doubtless be taking place as I type this and it’s a reply on Tuesday evening at their place.

EMOM V live action for Legion of Swine and HUNDBAJS

Legion of Swine teamed up again with his long term collaborator Christopher Nosnibor at the 5th Electronic Music Open Mic at The Fulford Arms in York. This feast of noise and spoken venom was captured by a process called video recording. Here is the result -

Earlier in the evening, "onstage midlife crisis noise" was created by new Ojud Records' act HUNDBAJS. Some of his performance was also captured on video -

Noise in the Shed - Smash It Out all-dayer photos

Legion of Swine was very pleased to be among the fine noiseheads performing in the Noise Shed at the Smash It Out all-dayer at The Windmill in Brixton. Below are some grainy images captured of the chaos and beauty of the day - many many thanks to Tim Drage and Lisa McKendrick for having the Swine to play. The event concluded with a noise off involving most of the participants.

I feel heavy metal....a few days in Dortmund

I recently had the good luck to spend some days in Dortmund with my long-term mate and ex-work colleague Rees Archibald, who is currently on a residency at the Künstlerhaus in the city. Rees has been "having conversations" with large pieces of metal, sheet-steel in the main, over the past three years or so. Over this time, he has been investigating sounds that can be created in the steel by vibration via feedback loops through a contact mic and a transducer - limiting, gain and pitch-shifting and hopefully control comes via a Max/MSP patch. A large amount of listening was done to discover new sounds, which are affected by contact mic position and adjustments of the above mentioned parameters. It was pretty tiring work, with around five to six hours of testing and listening per day, but really rewarding to be involved in and gave me ideas for my own practice.

Find below some lo-fi media from my camera - the much higher quality stuff will be on Rees' website in the near future and I'll link to that later. The first pictures are of the first sheet that was worked on in the non-installation space -

The images that follow show the two sheets in their probable installation positions in the much more reverberant exhibition space. The testing for this suggests much quieter sound pressures due to the build up on reflections in this new space - so a lot of listening and balancing of levels is needed. Sadly at this stage, it was time for me to leave Dortmund, so I look forward to seeing and hearing the pair in action with Rees as controller/mediator!

Overall this was a very interesting and artistically satisfying few days. Thanks to Rees and all at Künstlerhaus in Dortmund for their welcome.
