This time Redgrass and Legion of Swine get reviewed - here are the words of Ben Rutledge
Redgrass – British Democracy and Other Myths (Ojud Records)
It took a few spins of ‘British Democracy...’ for me to half succumb to its charm and I’m still very much bewildered. Redgrass, as the name may or may not suggest, is a left-wing political Bluegrass group and another mutant offspring spawned by the man behind Legion of Swine and Swinefest, Dave Procter. No surprise then that it’s a fairly odd affair.
The musicianship leaves a lot to be desired, the singing is way off key and I’m not really sure how long past the opening banjo line you can actually call it Bluegrass before it descends into a-genred mindless chord bashing but there’s something endearing about this little record. Maybe the half-baked music fumblings give it a DIY edge or maybe behind the shoddy execution the song writing itself isn’t all that bad - or maybe it’s the lyrics. The lyrics are one of my favourite parts of this record. Whether it’s the affectionate ode to Leeds ‘Old Grey Men’ with its regurgitative ramblings about class or the superbly out of place jovial but aggressive lines in ‘Assassination’s Too Good’.
Legion of Swine – They Took Democracy and they Threw it onto the Pyre with the Rest of the Legion of Swine (Ojud Records)
Imagine the combined effects of sleep deprivation and sickness whilst nursing the ensuing result of a heavily inebriated night. Now imagine sitting down, setting your feet up on the coffee table and being greeted not by the sweet, lulling, rehabilitating sounds of Enya’s voice, but by a cacophony of grating feedback. Imagination was not my issue - which admittedly might affect the bias of this review. Although, I sincerely doubt that in any better off state I would have found the varying pitches of monotonous noise any more endearing.
‘They Took Democracy...’ is ostensibly a collection of field recordings and noise experiments which range from: a person snoring (Track 3), a washing machine (Track 5), and a personal highlight in Track 2 which sounds like someone’s unintended voicemail message after hurling themselves onto the train tracks. But maybe that was just my own suicidal fantasies induced by the interminable racket invading my lug-holes. Legion of Swine was never going to be easy listening and perhaps a groggy day on the sofa in my living room wasn’t the right environment to find any potential in the layers of abstract sound. Maybe if it served an accompaniment to a short film or an art installation it would make more sense but as for now the album remains basking in its own esoteric obscurity.
Those lovely people in Vibrations' Magazine (see side link on this very blog) have had a listen to touseg maro's debut LP. Here are their words of wisdom -
In defining ‘Noise’ are we in effect making it something else other than ‘Noise’? Possibly, and the limited information and visual clues that accompany touseg maro’s latest 4 track EP - a single photo of a primitive burial (?) site don’t offer much help taking this premise forward.
‘Penn ar bed’ is Breton for ‘end of the earth’ – a geographical reference to the rugged Brittany Peninsular. But another reference point for me is Japan and Hiroshi Hashegawa’s Astro project – the tracks here are all underpinned by a similar single shrill insectoid high frequency wave. But although each track here makes use of the same sonic raw materials; interjections of muffled cyclical percussion, otherworldly death echoes, naked flame ignitions and metallic washes, the intensity progresses from the haunting minimalistic opener ‘c’hwec’h’ to the apocalyptical harshness of closing track ‘Seizh’ – a wash of staggered pulses, static clatter and haphazard mic interference.
This is the title of the next split tape between Legion of Swine and Noah Brown, which will be available as a split release between Ojud and Horrible Injury. A C30 cassette, limited to 20. Contact us here now to reserve your copy. It'll be 4 quid, summat like that.
Legion of Swine has finished mastering touseg maro's debut release "penn ar bed" and it will be released on Ojud Records, with catalogue number Ojud 006 on the 1st of August 2012. It is a limited to 15 C30 cassette tape, get it while it's available (once it comes out of course :-) ).
Redgrass play their last Leeds date for a while as they prepare to go into the studio to record their 2nd LP in the early autumn. Come wish them well at New Headingley Club on Friday the 6th of July 2012. Also on the bill are Topher Holland, Mordrake (Katy Raine's new act) and hosting by The Living Jukebox Andy Watson.

Not content with all the stuff he is doing currently, Legion of Swine is teaming up with fellow racket maker Java Delle from die Infantillerie for their new act - Trouser Carrier, which as you know is the direct translation of braces from German to English.
Expect an LP by the autumn entitled "A Flower for My Hoonoo" - this is according to an Ojud Records' spokesman "Nice noise played by nice boys".
The above link jumps to an article written by Sam Saunders, a long time contributor to the Leeds Music Scene forum (and website). It discusses the Live and Unsigned competition and how bands are (mis)treated. Worth a read, sadly
Cheers to everyone who came to the gig at The Fox and Newt in Leeds last night - great performances all round by Racket Ball and Windup Birds
Redgrass' debut LP "British Democracy and Other Myths" will be available at http://redgrass.bandcamp.com/ as pay-what-you-want downloads in the very near future. A physical release will be available in the summer sometime.

Legion of Swine will be working on a new act called +15 over the next few months. +15 will be dedicated to producing an LP of minimalist beats, with the title "Kriminal Justice Akt", in "tribute" to the Law attempting to ban "repetitive beats" introduced in the UK in the early 1990s.
Around the same time, all the output of Legion of Swine's various guises will move to his new label Ojud.
After his Scandinavian sojourn, LoS returns to Leeds at the end of this month, and is straight into action with Redgrass at Milo's in Leeds on Saturday the 4th of Feb (Facebook event here - https://www.facebook.com/events/167832749987707) onstage dead early around 1930 and then as DJ Alfonse at Don't Falter at Baby Jupiter (Facebook event here - https://www.facebook.com/events/221980047889348/) pretty much straight after going off stage. Hectic stuff, and lots of fun. Yes. I am happy to be coming back to you, people of Leeds. :-)
Today saw the opening session of mixing the debut Redgrass LP "British Democracy and Other Myths" with our very fine friend Ben Mosley, who engineered the recordings. Expect fully mastered results in early March.
Happy New Year to all my readers and followers. This year will be a busy one. Legion of Swine live dates on a European Tour with Die Infantillerie and Interstellar Nightmare in May are coming in as we speak. Details will be forthcoming as dates and venues are confirmed.
Legion of Swine will also be recording and releasing his debut LP, provisionally entitled "And They Threw Democracy on the Pyre with the Rest of the Legion of Swine", probably to be available by mid April.
Redgrass' debut LP, as yet untitled, will also be released, probably in March. Mixing begins this very week.
